Levitations of encyclopaedic painting

Caroline Kryzecki

Caroline Kryzecki's most recent work presents us with a cornucopia of subjects and technical variations. In her experimental yet strictly systematic approach the artist is committed to a thorough stocktaking of the oft-proclaimed flood of images. Whilst sticking to her motto that irrational thoughts should be followed absolutely and logically, she playfully rummages through our cultural repertory of forms, thus subversively undermining the image's role as a landmark. Her method, being as spontaneous as it is intuitive, allows her to open up our world of images, which is so restricted by functionality and the dominance of language, to new perspectives of lively association and lucent fantasy.

Fabian Fobbe

Fabian Fobbe's paintings present us with the paradox of being corporeal whilst at the same time seeming to float. In his paintings the young artist takes on the contemporary experience of dizzying weightlessness induced by the bodiless visualisations of the virtual world. It is his pastose use of the paint that provides them with substance and stability. In doing so and by introducing absurd forms from the virtual world he overcomes the outdated notion of the concrete: The concrete is not a question of the subject but rather of technique. He thus frees himself from our current compulsion to subject ourselves to the new media by adopting their effects. Through his bold dispute with the specific aesthetics of digital imagery and its absurd fantasy he succeeds in gaining new territory for painting: The possibility of a concomitance of otherwise incommensurable opposites.
